Congrats on a great year! This is easily one of my favorite 'stacks, and one of the rare instances where I'm disappointed to not be paying anything. (And thank you for the honor. Never thought something I wrote would be alongside folks like Sherman Alexie and Scott Alexander, that's for sure.)
I’m new to your Substack and have not yet read any of your essays, but loved reading these comments! Great idea to share and it makes me want to dive into your essays. Sounds like we write on similar subjects
Thank you Charlotte! The first 1k took a couple months to come in after I started. I began with a small email list of 170, which I randomly collected on my personal website for years, thinking one day I might need it. The first outgoing TIP email was actually the first use of it. Getting from ~170 to ~1,000 required a couple lucky shares on twitter by some bigger names, as well as a couple good showings on link websites like Hackernews.
Agreed; the context often adds a lot. A tricky bit for this kind of thing is that sometimes a comment can be good, but need the context of a top level comment to make sense (personally I wouldn't have thought of the one highlighted from me as a particularly good comment, but it does stand alone).
I wonder when we see the first meta-meta post. "Here are all my favorite comments from all my favorite substack authors who posted comments"
I really enjoyed this format - a unique and fun way to read through a summary of your recent work

Glad I discovered you via this awesome platform! Where were you before here? Like where did the first 1k subs come from?

Bravo. I think I first discovered your work from the MFA-fiction article trending on Twitter.
And thanks for highlighting one of my comments! Love this roundup!
Fascinating! Good on you, Erik! Inspiring. I started with I think 50 subscribers in august and have 145 now. Slow going but...going.
It would have been better if you would link to their comments instead of just their profiles/the posts
